Timeshare Weeks Explained

timeshare weeks 2024

2024 is here! With a new year comes new vacations, and that means you’ll need to plan. While your destination and the value of the resort you choose are very important, there’s one other aspect of timeshares that’s just as important to consider: timeshare weeks. But what are timeshare weeks, and how do they work? Whether you’re an experienced timeshare owner looking for the scoop on the week’s calendar or someone new to the world of vacation ownership, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s everything you need to know about the timeshare calendar.

What Are Timeshare Weeks?

A timeshare is a vacation property that someone owns the right to use, generally for a week at a time. When someone purchases vacation ownership, they are essentially purchasing seven days at a resort. The timeshare week is a date determined by the calendar. Each week on the calendar is assigned a number. Then, buyers purchase an interval of time based on those weeks.

Some weeks are valued differently than others, and some cost more, some less. If you purchase a gorgeous ocean-front week in Virginia Beach during the month of June, it may cost more than that same view at the beginning of December. It all just depends on the market and developers. With vacation exchange, however, owners have more flexibility than ever before.

Fixed Week Timeshares

The most traditional form of vacation ownership, and where timeshare started, is a fixed week timeshare. Owners purchase a designated fixed week number at a specific site or resort, which they have full rights to use every year. One of the benefits of a fixed week is the lack of planning necessary. No need to make reservations, find a hotel, or coordinate a time to vacation. Your fixed week is always available and ready for you at the same time and place every year.

Floating Week Timeshares

Floating weeks were introduced later on to the vacation ownership world to give owners more flexibility. With floating weeks, owners purchase within a specific season of a resort, in which they can choose which week they would like to reserve. Floating weeks do provide more flexibility, but more advance planning is necessary to secure the week you would like to vacation during.

How to Get Even More Value Out of Your Vacation Ownership

We get it. Not everyone wants to use their fixed week timeshare to visit the same location on the same dates each year. Fortunately, there’s a way to get even more use out of your timeshare: vacation exchange. Vacation exchange allows you to exchange your calendar weeks to visit other resorts around the world. In fact, the two biggest vacation exchange programs, RCI and Interval International, each have thousands of resorts in their networks. As a result, these networks are a fantastic way to see the world, all for the price of a single timeshare. It’s important to note that if you want to become a member of RCI or Interval International, you’ll need to own a timeshare that’s affiliated with their network. Here are some of the top resorts affiliated with these programs.

How Does the Timeshare Calendar Work?

Our timeshare calendar tool was designed with vacation owners in mind. While you’re looking out for your date on this year’s weeks calendar, you can also calculate your timeshare weeks for years to come. Planning your getaway now can allow plenty of time to make the necessary arrangements with your pets, family, and other responsibilities. Not to mention, starting your planning early can make it easier to book the resort you want if you’re going to use vacation exchange.

The calendar is split into three sections: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Use these sections, along with each week’s column, to see the actual dates each week on the calendar falls. You’ll also want to keep in mind that every year has a different calendar, which means that the dates will change in 2025. Be sure to check in the next calendar year to verify the new dates when planning your next vacation.

What if the Week System Isn’t For Me?

If you like the idea of timeshares but aren’t a fan of fixed or floating weeks, you’re in luck! There’s an alternative to weeks-based timeshares: timeshare points. With timeshare points, you won’t have to worry about staying at the same resort in the same week each year. Instead, you can use your points to stay at one of many resorts whenever you want. Your home resort will determine how many points you get for a year, and from there, you’ll have plenty of flexibility to plan your getaway. Many vacation clubs even allow you to bank your points for your next vacation.

With so many benefits, you might be wondering why people still buy timeshare weeks. One of the biggest reasons is convenience. Fixed-week owners don’t have to worry about planning ahead to stay at the resort they want. They can arrive at their resort during the specific week they paid for, check-in, and enjoy their vacation. While many points-based timeshares offer priority booking for their home resort, you’ll still want to book at your preferred property ahead of time, especially if it’s at a popular resort or during a busy season.
