Portugal Is A Seaside Paradise

Vacationers looking for a different kind of European experience often find themselves exploring the wonders Portugal has to offer. A bit different from its neighbors, the country is considered one of the continent's warmest, with annual temperatures averaging in the high 50s to mid-60s Fahrenheit. The weather coupled with the many beaches, historic sites and quaint cities make Portugal a destination travelers are not likely to forget.

Covering approximately 35,600 square miles, the country borders Spain and the Atlantic Ocean. Its geographical features include Tagus river, which splits the country, mountains and rich river valleys. The country's highest point is found on Pico Island. Mount Pico rises more than 7,700 feet into the sky. Visitors who come to Portugal often do so to take in the natural splendor. Major draws to this ancient seafaring country include:

Peneda-Gerês National Park: This park in the country's northlands features breathtaking views and some very unusual animal inhabitants. The park is home to golden eagles, wild ponies and even the Castro Laboreiro dog breed. The villages of Soajo and Lindoso are both found in proximity to the park and both feature their own castles that dominate their landscapes.
  • World Heritage sites: Portugal is chockfull of important historic and natural sites deemed worthy of protecting by UNESCO. Some of the sites visitors make the trek to see include landmarks in Sintra, Evora, Pico Island, Porto and Giumaraes. Visitors to these regions, and many others in Portugal, will find picturesque towns with cobbled streets and old castles, ancient ruins and important, historic churches.
  • Golf: Believe it or not, golf is a major attraction in this country. With beautiful oceanic views and backdrops that feature ancient castles, Portugal paints a perfect picture for golfing adventures. The region around Algarve alone offers about 30 courses. Other golf hot spots include the Setubal region and Lisboa.
  • Water sports: The waters of Portugal are legendary for sailing, swimming, fishing, diving and simply just sunbathing.
  • Dining, nightlife and festivals: Portugal's many hotspots are noted for their incredible dining and spirited festivals and nightclub scenes. Visitors will find the activities tend to vary depending on the time of year and the exact destination.
  • Adventure sports: Many tourists make their way to Portugal to take part in extreme sports. The country is loved by ski divers, mountain climbers, hikers and more.

With the status of being one of Europe's oldest countries, Portugal is a historian's dream. Its many landmarks and visual wonders speak to the past, but there is a distinctly modern flair in the metropolitan areas. Visitors to the country will find its had brushes with Phoenician, Roman, Greek and many other cultures before the country gained independence in the 12th century. Long noted as a seafaring nation, the Portuguese hold the distinction of being the first Europeans to sail to Africa, the Orient and even South America. Those who visit Portugal will find themselves walking in the footsteps of giants. From the powerful kings of this country and its many brave explorers to the Roman legionnaires who walked its shores, Portugal has strong ties to the past. This history and its beautiful landscapes and wonderful activities draw visitors from all over the world to take in the sights and experience all that is Portugal.
