Ocean City Provides A Capital Escape

The area in and around Washington, D.C., is not generally noted for being a beach-lover's paradise, but then there is often an exception or two to every rule. In this case, the exception is commonly found in Ocean City, Maryland. This resort town is a major draw for those who want to escape from it all, while enjoying the slower place beach life affords.

Visitors who come to Ocean City often do so to escape the hustle and bustle of the metro areas. Others, however, make the trek in order to stay in a more relaxing area that still provides the opportunity to see all the sights of Maryland, Washington and other nearby destinations. Within Ocean City, however, travelers will find enough to see and do to fill up an entire trip. Some of the most popular things to do include:

  • The Boardwalk: The city's three-mile-long boardwalk has been named one of America's Top 10 boardwalks by the Travel Channel. The area in and around the boardwalk is noted for its old-time feel. There is even a carousel that dates to 1902. Within this area, visitors will find restaurants, games, plenty of shops for souvenir hunting, arcades and rides. The boardwalk is considered ideal for early morning bike rides or late afternoon and evening strolls. Lending an old-fashion carnival feel to the waterfront, the boardwalk is considered a "must see" by many. It is the center attraction in this region.
  • Beaches: Offering 10 miles of white sand beaches, Ocean City is famous for its water-related activities. The community is ranked by many as the east coast's number one family resort, with the Ocean City beaches taking top credit for this designation. The Atlantic Ocean's waters are perfect for swimming, skiing, sailing, diving and more during the right time of year. Fishing fans also find the area is ripe for adventure.
  • Amusements, attractions: Ocean City is home to and nearby many area attractions that appeal to visitors of all ages. Some of the tops ones include the 65th Street Slide & Ride, the Frontier Town Western Theme Park, Holly Ridge Equestrian Center, Carousel Ice Rink and the Jolly Roger Amusement Park.
  • Museums, culture: The Ocean City area offers a number of galleries and museums for visitors to explore. Some of the popular stops include the Victorian Costen House, Furnace Town Living Heritage Museum, the Mt. Zion One Room School, Queponco Railroad Station and St. Martin's Church. The area is jam packed with colonial and early American sites that are worth notice.
  • Golfing: The area in and around Ocean City is noted for its world-class golf action. Eagle's Landing is one of the area's most noted courses. It has ranked on Golf Digest's Top 100 list many times. Other courses include Bay Club, Beach Club and Deer Run, which all boast PGA pro status.
  • Special events: The city is noted for its busy summer event schedule. Concerts on the Beach are legendary from July through August. Other events are commonly scheduled throughout the year.

Although only a stone's throw from some of America's most populated areas, Ocean City offers a different pace. This resort area is a favorite for many with its beaches, amusements, dining and outdoor activities beckoning to travelers from all over the world.
