New York Delivers More Than City Life

While many would be visitors think solely of the city, there is much more to do and see in the Empire State than vacationers realize. From world-class ski resorts and amusement parks to mountains and lakes, there is a lot more to this state than meets the eye.

Visitors who make New York state their destination often take in:

  • Mountains: With the Adirondack, Allegheny and Catskills found in New York, visitors find there is definitely life outside the big city. The mountains are popular tourist destination for those who want to hike, climb, camp and even ski. The Adirondacks' White Face Mountain in fact played host to the 1980 Olympic winter games.
  • Outdoor activities:From hunting within the state's many forested areas to visiting its Finger Lakes and other bodies of water for swimming, skiing, boating, diving and fishing, there are many life activities to explore in the regions outside the city. Hunting, in fact, is one of the state's most popular outdoor attractions in season.
  • Horse racing: This is a famous pastime in New York State. Visitors here will find the home of the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, N.Y., and the world famous harness track in Upstate's Saratoga, which incidentally is home to a thriving arts and cultural scene.
  • Amusement parks: From New York City's Coney Island to Upstate's The Great Escape, Magic Forest and Aqua Adventure, there are many amusement parks to explore.
  • Zoos: The state is famous not only for its Bronx Zoo with more than 6,000 animals, but also the Utica Zoo in Upstate and a few others, as well.
  • Niagara Falls: This is a top destination for travelers from all over the world. It is the legendary home of the Maid of the Mist and has played host to more weddings and honeymoons than anyone could possibly count.
  • Historic sites: The entire state is loaded with historic sites and landmarks to explore. From famous pre-Colonial homesteads and Revolutionary-era battlefields and forts to American Indian sites, historic tourists will find themselves very busy if New York is their destination. Some of the top spots include New York City's Statue of Liberty, the United Nations building and Time Square. Other sites include forts and historic homes dotted throughout the Upstate landscape and many buildings within the capital city of Albany.
  • Shopping: From the famous stores and shopping districts of New York City to the outlet stores on the borders with New England, this entire state is considered by many to be a shopper's mecca. Beyond the couture, visitors will also find many regions are rich with handcrafts, antiques and more.
  • Legendary businesses: From the financial centers of New York City to the historic founding sites of such companies as Xerox, French's mustard, Eastman Kodak and Bausch & Lomb, the state is also home to some of America's largest and most noted companies.

While the city is no doubt the state's biggest draw for tourists, travelers and sightseers, the entire state has its own treasures to uncover. From beautiful mountain views to historic sites, there is much more to New York state than meets the eye.
