Jamaica Shines In The Western Caribbean
If all of the world's most popular island destinations were ranked, Jamaica would very likely shine in the Top 10. This Western Caribbean island is favored for its incredible beaches, beautiful landscapes and its rich history, which gives tourists more to see and do than newcomers often imagine.
The island itself was first discovered on Columbus' voyage in 1494. This discovery led to nearly 500 years of European rule over the island and its people. The contact, however, would leave Jamaica with a very rich history that features British dominance from the mid 1600s until the island's 1962 independence.
Visitors today will find the country still maintains a strong British flavoring, but with distinct island tones. The things tourists tend to revel in when Jamaica is the destination include:
- Water sports: The entire island is legendary for its incredible beaches and warm tropical waters. Here visitors enjoy swimming, sailing, fishing and most especially scuba diving and snorkeling. The rivers here also provide for some great tubing experiences.
- Hiking, riding and biking: Many visitors to Jamaica prefer to take in the sights on foot, bicycle or horseback. The island is home to many locations to arrange for mounts, bicycle rentals and more. There are even guided tours through some of its more wild areas.
- Golfing: Hitting the links in Jamaica is considered a real treat. With warm sunny days and world-class courses just waiting, many find there is no better round of golf anywhere in the world. Notable courses include the White Witch Course, Three Palms Ocean Course and Half Moon Golf.
- Bird watching: With more than 252 different species of birds, the island is considered a bird watcher's dream. Tours are available to facilitate this activity.
- Dunns River Falls & Park: Visitors who want to take in the sights of the jungle often find themselves at Dunns River Falls, and is fast becoming a major stop on most itineraries. The landscape is rich, but entry to the park does cost a few dollars. Most find it is well worth it to see some of the most picturesque scenery in the world.
- Historic tours: A variety of historic tours are available on the island. Ranging from plantation tours to stops at historic British sites and even the Bob Marley Museum and Mausoleum, the tours can give tourists a greater appreciation for the island and its long history.
- Other activities: Jamaica is famous for its Caribbean cuisine, upbeat nightlife and incredible music. It is possible to enjoy some serious steel band music and reggae while taking in the beauty such stops as Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Kingston have to offer. Visitors to these destinations will also find a host of art galleries, shops and more to keep them more than busy when they're not on the beaches.
Offering a rich Caribbean experience on an island many believe is the most beautiful in the region, Jamaica pays host to millions of visitors each year. From its beaches and jungle waterfalls to its distinction of being the home of the late, but great reggae legend Bob Marley, Jamaica is a place that beckons travelers to visit and leaves them wanting only to return.
