Bermuda Is An Island Of Distinction

Whilst many believe the tiny territory of Bermuda is a jewel in the Caribbean, this is a common misconception. The island grouping itself is actually located east of America's North Carolina, making it an easy trip from the South and the Northeast. If this fact comes as a surprise, so too will the many things to see and do within the boundaries of this small British holding.

Covering just under 21 square miles, the islands of Bermuda are home to some 75 miles of coastline. From dramatic rocky outcroppings to world famous pink sand beaches, the territory is considered a wonder to behold. Although thought to be a single island, Bermuda is, in fact, a collection of almost 180 separate islands connected by bridges. The draws for this island paradise are many, not the least of which are the picturesque landscapes.

Bermuda is a favorite among tourists for its many things to see and do, including:

  • Beaches: The pink sand beaches made so by the tropical coral reefs Bermuda is famous for drawing in tourists by the thousands. Most of the beaches are open to the public, but a few private retreats do exist. Many of the resort hotels own their own private stretches for visitors to explore at their leisure.
  • Wildlife: Visitors to Bermuda will find some of the most unusual animals in the world. The territory is home to some 350 different bird species, 650 species of fish and a host of unusual animals, as well. Sea turtles and tree frogs are well noted in this region as are a host of underwater creatures, including dolphin.
  • History: As Great Britain's oldest colony, Bermuda is home to a number of historic sites. From shipwrecks to colonial sites and African heritage, visitors can explore it all. The town of St. George is a World Heritage site and is known for its historic harbor, town square and many old homes and churches. Hamilton was incorporated in 1793 and features a bounty of historic sites, shops and more for visitors to explore at their leisure.
  • Culture: Visitors will find museums, glass blowing studios, art galleries and much more when they visit the islands. In addition, there are a variety of festivals, musical performances and more going on all the time. It is hard to visit Bermuda when there is nothing on the calendar.
  • Water sports: Bermuda is famous for its fishing, sailing, diving, swimming, parasailing and more. The surf and the sand are some of the biggest reasons people flock to this region and keep returning year after year.
  • Land activities: Beyond the beaches and historic sites, visitors will find Bermuda is home to world-class golf, Botanic Gardens, a perfumery and the Royal Naval Dockyard. The things to see and do on the land are accessible by foot, moped and a host of other conveyances.

Offering a distinctly different view of island life, Bermuda is a destination that many put high on their lists. Steeped in British tradition, this island still developed a flavor all its own. Those who visit never forget the beautiful sights, the pink sand beaches and the balmy tropical breezes.
